Maddening Idiocy

A review from The Boat

It is always risky to write erotica where rape/dubious consent are involved. The risk of disgusting the reader and embarass oneself is particularly high, especially in a society such as ours where unfortunately such episodes are a daily occurrence.
The author has somehow to convey the feeling that, despite the situation being charged with menace, the supposed victim is actually enjoying himself.

This does not happen here. There is menace, there is violence but the workings of the victim's mind that should make it clear he is not really a victim are shaky at best.
Withouth the right characterization all I felt as a reader was the indignity of the situation.

That the writing is decent matters very little in this case.

Well hello! Erotica is all about fantasy. People read erotica to place themselves (via their imagination) in places and situations they would never go or want to experience in reality. That is the job of all works of fiction and movies. But in erotic fiction fantasies being awakened are of the utmost importance.

In my story The Boat, a man is out and about on a nocturnal walk. He's kind of in the mood for something. He passes by a large ship docked at port and decides to take a few photos. The crewman working the boat accost him thinking he might be a spy for the DEA. They take him to the hold of the ship and do all kinds of unimaginable things to him. They let him go afterward. He leaves quite satisfied after his "ordeal." He goes back the next morning, but the boat is gone. There is a bit of longing in his heart for the sailors.
Yes in reality rape is brutal and terrible. But we as gay men know the stuff of movies and books is all about fantasy. At least I thought we all knew.
